Having done my fair share of inventory counts over the years, I can tell you it can be a tedious and monotonous week. Quite often the management will bring in a batch of rental scales for the workers to look at and familiarize themselves with a few days before the big count. Then usually we’ll get trained by a scale tech for a few minutes on the basics of how to do basic counts and what not to do.
Overall, I find the experience kind of fun. It’s a change of pace from the usual day to day activity. The actual day inventory starts is fun too, some folks like to count accurately and do it right. While others see how fast they can do it. I guess if I had to give any pointers to folks, I’d say make sure you’re consistent. That’s what I’ve found over the years. If you use a sample size of 10 pieces for each item, do it for each item. A lot of folks start with 10, then if they find out they can actually use 5, they do that. That creates inconsistency and accuracy suffers.
